Abstract: Snakehead fish (Channa striata) in Myanmar have been highly exploited, leading to production declination. This is the first study of snakehead fish’s fishing activities to gather information for support long-term sustainable utilization of this species in Yegyi Township, Myanmar. The study focused on current status of snakehead fishing activities and its management issues in Yegyi Township. The research was conducted by field survey with total of 180 fishers in 6 fishing villages in 2019. The result showed that between 2015 and 2019, catch of snakehead fish reduced from 123.6 ton/year to 105 ton/year in this area, decreasing about 5% every year. Fishers used steel or wooden fishing boats with 13-15 ft long and powered by 3.5-7.5 hp engines and non-powered boats. The 69% of sampled fishers used bamboo traps as the primary fishing gears. Fishers operated their fishing for 20 days/month through the year according to lunar cycle. Production was 14.92±0.99 ton/month during low season (December to February) and 8.43±2.55 ton/month during high season (August to November). The average fishing cost and benefit for snakehead fish were 3,444±684 USD/year and 2,960±1,584 USD/year respectively. SWOT analysis result showed that Myanmar has a restricted Freshwater Fishery law and announced seasonal closure (May to July), but there is some weakness on implementation due to low awareness and participation in conservation of fishers. Insufficient data collecting system of government could be strengthen for the long-term fisheries management. Together with the driven force from very high demand of the market for dried snakehead fish, it was found that during seasonal closure, fishers still operated their fishing with the catch of 6.02±1.47 ton/month, and total length ranged from 20-35 cm. To fulfill the suitable management approach of this fish, further study for the species is recommended, more data collection should be collected. Awareness of fishers on snakehead fish conservation should also be strengthen. In addition, Myanmar Government may consider the alternative fishery management measures for this species.
