Integrated STEM-SSI to enhance students' critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills among indonesian school students
Abstract:
This study aimed to promote critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills through engaging science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and socioscientific issues. This study was divided into three phases: the first phase was conducted to explore the Indonesian science teachers views based on understanding, experiences, perceptions, and knowledge. The results indicated that most Indonesian teachers held a positive view on encouraging science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and socioscientific issues-based teaching and promoting critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills to contribute in achieving the target and outcomes and share their opinions about the current implementation of science lessons at the secondary school level. The second phase aimed to examine the ways Indonesian students improve their critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills when engaging in integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and socioscientific issues. One Indonesian secondary school was chosen from the western region through the purposive sampling process for the intervention. The results showed suggestively enhanced students' learning achievement through developing students' critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills. Additionally, the multiple tests and observations assessment measured by understanding science concepts. The third phase of this study aimed to investigate how the Indonesian science teachers teach and students learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, socioscientific issues, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving skills. The results indicated that learning integration through applying the instructional 6E teachings in the implementation of science lessons is highly effective in investigating crucial students' outcomes and skills such as critical thinking, and collaborative problemsolving skills related to the twenty-first century skills, with the majority of students perceiving that concerned with the action, concerned with thinking, topic interest, and situation learning which created the actual teaching environment that promotes academic achievement and students' success ability.
