Development of wireless power transfer systems and control strategies for static and dynamic wireless charging applications

Abstract: In this thesis, a wireless power transfer (WPT) system using a virtual-current source resonant inverter (VCSRI) has been developed. The concept, theoretical analysis, simulations and experimental results have been reported. To validate the proposed WPT system, a scaled-down laboratory hardware prototype was built and tested. Then, the results were revealed that the proposed WPT could work properly when compare between simulations and experimental results. The comparison of maximum dc to dc power efficiencies between the conventional system (without control) and the proposed system (VCSRI) were 52 % and 60 %, respectively. A MultiCoiled Full-Bridge (MCFB) resonant inverter was proposed for a dynamic wireless charging application, with the design concept and theoretical analysis discussed. The newly designed dynamic wireless charging system uses switch-branched sharing (SBS), so that the number of power semiconductor devices is reduced. The closed-loop control strategy for MCFB resonant inverter is presented without any communication between the transmitting and receiving side. The study of optimal conditions to achieve maximum efficiency transfer with respect to resistive load has been investigated. Then, applying the optimal resistive value improves the total efficiency. A 100 W scaleddown prototype MCFB resonant inverter consisting of four transmitting coupler modules and two receiving coupler modules was implemented. Moreover, the dynamic power transferring was measured at various speeds. Finally, various experimental tests were undertaken to confirm the proposed system’s feasibility. In addition, the studying on optimal condition for achieving maximum efficiency with respect to resistive load, a comparison with other related works, and testing results of dynamic or moving power transferring condition, have been presented in this thesis.
