Stomata and other epidermal traits in rice (Oryza Sativa) and responses to abiotic and biotic stresses
Abstract:
216 line if Jao hom Nin (JHN) neutron bombarded lines were screened to find interesting and useful stomata traits. As a results four stomata lines, namely JHN826 (Big stomata), JHN3117 (Small stomata), JHN2447 (High density), and JHN8756 (Low density) were selected for further research. Assessment of short-term stomatal opening and closing revealed the Small size stomata line was faster to close than the Large size line, whereas lines with altered stomatal density did not differ significantly from the control. None of the lines produced significantly more yield than controls under either well-watered or moderate drought conditions. At very high temperature, the stomatal conductance of high stomatal density plants was surprisingly stable whereas JHN controls had a large variation, in some plants resulting in large reductions in intrinsic water-use efficiency. 164 international rice germplasm was also screened and was results two rice cultivars showing an auxiliary trait of mega-papillae on stomata subsidiary cells, interestingly the trait was only fully formed on flag leaf stage. Quantification on the content of the trait was indicate that the major content of papillae is Silica. Moreover, the physiological function of the trait concluded how the trait affects gaseous exchange and responses to light cues. Under dark light treatment, mega papillae lines show a slower response to dark light and remarkably, either when the stomata closed or open, the mega papillae still showing higher iWUE compared to less papillae line. We also evaluate how the plants perform to Xanthomonas Oryzae pv. Oryzicola infection.
