Domestic elephant health problem in Kanchanaburi The survey of fecal cortisol, gastrointestinal parasites and prevalence of trypanosomiasis and brucellosis

Abstract: Most domestic Asian elephants in Kanchanaburi province, Thailand were heavily used for working several hours a day for many years, contributing to chronic stress and high opportunity of disease distribution for individual animals. Our study is the first time to evaluate health status baseline data of domestic Asian elephants in Kanchanaburi province, including to measure fecal glucocorticoid metabolites, to evaluate gastrointestinal parasitic infection and to survey trypanosomiasis and brucellosis between May 2015 and April 2016. The results indicated that trypanosomiasis is negative in elephants tested and showed 7.62% seropositive for examination of brucellosis by RBPT. Furthermore, this study showed a high susceptibility to gastrointestinal parasitic diseases especially Strongyle nematodes of elephants in Kanchanaburi province. Only three possible risk factors (experience of mahout, frequency of deworm, and deworming person) were associated with gastrointestinal parasites infection. This study found the total parasitic load and prevalence rate of gastrointestinal helminth infection was higher in winter than summer and rainy season. The low efficacy of febantel against helminths in elephants was found in this study. The study indicated that the permanent work with tourist activity, especially trekking can inevitably lead the elephants to stress. This information could be used as an important approach to support elephant camp management for improving the health of elephants and therefore improve planning for the welfare and conservation of this nationally important species.
