Taxonomic studies of some genera in the tribe phaseoleae (Fabaceae, Papilionoideae) in Thailand

Abstract: A taxonomic studies of some genera in the tribe Phaseoleae (Fabaceae, Papilionoideae) in Thailand was conducted from August 2014 to July 2018. Fourteen genera, 44 species, 1 subspecies, 8 varieties and 3 cultivar groups (50 taxa) are enumerated. Six genera are native in Thailand, i.e. Apios, Cruddasia, Dioclea, Dolichos, Dumasia, and Galactia. Seven genera are introduced for cultivation, i.e. Calopogonium, Centrosema, Lablab, Macroptilium, Phaseolus, Psophocarpus, and Strongylodon. Genus Vigna are found both native and introduced species. A key to the genera and species based on vegetative, flowering and fruiting characters is presented. The nomenclatures, lectotypifications, descriptions, photographs, illustrations, and notes about their distribution and ecology are provided. Vigna vexillata var. macrosperma is a new variety record. Two species of Dolichos(D. sp.1 and D. sp.2) are expected to be new species. The highest concentration of native and introduced taxa naturalized in the natural habitats is in the northern (29 species, 1 subspecies, 3 varieties, and 1 cultivar group). Four species, i.e. Cruddasia multifoliata, Dolichos fragrans, D. sp.2, and Vigna exilis are endemic to Thailand. The native and introduced taxa naturalized in the natural habitats occur within 8 habitat types in Thailand, i.e. montane rain forests, dry evergreen forests, peat swamp forests, strand vegetations, pinedeciduous dipterocarp forests, deciduous dipterocarp forests, mixed deciduous forests, and roadsides, near agricultural fields or disturbed areas, the lastest habitat has the highest number of species (23 species, 3 varieties, and 1 cultivar group). Thirty taxa were examined for pollen morphology by mean of SEM. On the basis of the type of pollen grains the genera can be divided into 3 groups. Similary, the pollen size can be used to distinguish 3 groups of the genera, whereas the exine sculpture can be seperated genera into 4 groups. However, the pollen data are appropriate characters for classification into genus, but do not provide good characters for classification within the genus. The phylogenetic study of tribe Phaseoleae was based on trnK-matK, that indicated tribe Phaseoleae is not resolved as monophyletic. The results can be support the classification into subtribe Cajaninae, Clitoriinae, Diocleinae, Glycininae, Kennediinae, Ophrestinae, and Phaseolinae within the tribe Phaseoleae.
