Knowledge, attitude, and practice of Thai honey producers on chemical residues in honey and good agricultural practice standard in honeybee farms
Abstract:
Beekeeping is a vital agricultural industry in Thailand's upper northern region, serving as the country's primary honey-producing area. To ensure the production of highquality and safe honey products, beekeepers are required to comply with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) standards. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of beekeepers, as well as the factors influencing GAP compliance. A structured questionnaire was administered to 102 beekeepers from Lamphun and Chiang Mai provinces. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that the majority of respondents were male (94.12%), aged over 45 years, and had more than five years of experience in beekeeping. Longan honey was identified as the predominant product among these farms. The primary source of information regarding farm practices was the local farmer network. The results indicated that while farmers possessed a moderate level of knowledge about GAP standards, their attitudes and practices were generally positive. Importantly, statistical analysis showed that receiving GAP certification was significantly associated with improved practices (Odds Ratio = 4.327, p-value = 0.012). Furthermore, both knowledge and positive attitudes were found to significantly influence the level of practice (p-value 0.013 and p-value = 0.020, respectively). Despite generally good attitudes and practices, farmers still faced challenges such as limited understanding of the benefits of GAP implementation, complexities within the standards, and issues related to honey adulteration. Therefore, it is recommended that government agencies and relevant stakeholders enhance support mechanisms to build farmers capacity and promote sustainable development within the beekeeping sector.
