Characterization of streptococcus suis isolated from pork and pigs in Thailand
Abstract:
Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a zoonotic pathogen which can cause serious diseases worldwide, especially in Asian countries. Since the majority of human cases reported in Thailand were infected by the consumption of a raw pork dish, the microbial food safety hazard associated with raw meat has been a matter of concern. The antimicrobial agents are widely used for prevention and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. The inappropriate use of antimicrobial agents in swine production can result in the increase of antimicrobial-resistant S. suis strains. Therefore, the aims of this study are to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial-resistant pattern of S. suis in pigs and their products. A total of 88 raw pork and offal samples were purchased from markets, butcher shops and supermarkets in central Thailand. The samples were examined using the loopmediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique. The antimicrobial-resistant pattern of S. suis isolates was examined by antimicrobial susceptibility test and the antimicrobialresistant genes were further examined using PCR technique. According to the results of LAMP reactions, the percentage of S. suis-contaminated samples was as high as 85.23% (75/88) while the percentage of S. suis serotype 2- contaminated samples was 17.05% (15/88). The high percentage of S. suis contamination was found in both offal (lung and heart) and meat (pork and minced pork) samples. In addition, S. suis isolates examined in this study had resistant genes and high frequency of resistance to erythromycin and tetracycline. The results from this study will contribute to the development of effective strategies for prevention and control of this zoonotic infection.
