The factors determining household debt and effect on consumption in Thailand in both rural and urban area by using micro data

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors determining household debt and effect on consumption in Thailand in both urban and rural area. This study uses secondary data from the National Statistical Office of Thailand (NSO) in 2017 containing 43,210 observations. The main findings show that income, home value, education, mortgage and rent home, number of burdens, own business employee has a positive effect on household debt. Moreover, the people in urban have the highest level of debt at age 42 year old while people in rural have those at age 53 year old. According to the effect of household debt on consumption, we find that total household debt has a positive effect on total consumption. Moreover, the mortgage has a positive effect on service consumption while debt from consumption has a highly positive effect on durable consumption. In addition, in both urban and rural area, members of generation Z and millennials consumes more durable goods than baby boomers do.
