Application of recycled paper sludge for production of lightweight concrete block
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to analyze the components content and fiber property content in the recycled-paper sludge discharged from paper mills, to study the application of the fibrous sludges for the production of lightweight concretes and to analyzed their properties. The experiment was carried out using the recycled paper sludge from a tissue mills and a linerboard mills. The pulp fibers were obtained from the various levels of washing condition. Fiber morphology and their strength properties were studied. The lightweight concretes were produced using a typical lightweight concrete formulation and various types and doses of sludge. The concrete properties including the density, compressive resistance, and heat insulation were analyzed. The results showed that the fibrous sludge from tissue mill had higher content of fiber of about 45% and fiber length was 0.61 mm, while the sludge from linerboard mills contained pulp fibers about 30% and fiber length was 0.85 mm. It was found that density of the obtained concrete blocks were influenced by type and content of the fibrous sludge. Their compressive resistance and heat insulation were also affected by the amount of fibers in the fibrous sludges. A higher pulp fiber content gave a better heat insulation properties, but gave a lower compressive strength. The recycled paper sludge could be used for lightweight concrete production with the fiber content from 20% up to 70%
