Abstract:
Process performance of pilot scale Down-flow Hanging Sponge (DHS) system for treating onsite Municipal sewage has been investigated at Bongai community, Khlong toei, Bangkok, for almost 2 years. The system consisted of 4 segments of PVC column which each segment contained sponge media with horizontal alignment, and 1 clarifier for collecting treated wastewater. The system was initially set up with different HRTs, starting from 12, 9, and 4 hours, respectively. Thereafter, an HRT of 5 hours was selected as an optimum condition. After 303 days of the operation, DHS system achieved BOD and COD removal efficiency of 91±1% and 83±13%, respectively. Subsequently, on the 345th day, the fluctuation flow was used in order to imitate actual wastewater treatment plant operation. During lower flow rate operation, the DHS reactor showed an excellent BOD and COD removal efficiency of 91±12% and 80±18%, respectively. For higher flow rate operation, DHS maintained a satisfied removal efficiency of 74±19% and 84±24% for BOD and COD, respectively. In addition, this DHS reactor showed better E.coli removal efficiency and lower energy consumption (84%) than current operating Activated Sludge process at Bongai community. Although the DHS system was operated without external aeration, it showed sufficient process performance. This study demonstrates that the DHS system is an appropriate optionfor the direct treatment of municipal sewage as a sustainable technology
