The contamination of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in marine animals a case study of the crude oil spill into the coastal areas, Rayong province 2013
Abstract:
Research on contamination of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in marine animals, after crude oil spilled into the coastal areas, Rayong province on 27 July 2013 was conducted during September 2013 to November 2015. The result indicated that the contamination of TPH in the eastern part of Rayong coastline was significantly higher than the western part of Rayong coastline (p=0.01). Furthermore, the contamination of TPH in the eastern part of Rayong coastline was significantly higher than Phe Bay (p=0.04). The results reveal that sources of TPH at Rayong coastal area were from human activities. According to Ao Prao Bay, Samed island, Rayong province where was direct impacted from oil spill, the contamination of TPH in aquatic animals were higher than other areas around Samed Island during 89 days after oil spill. However, the aquatic animals in Ao Prao Bay have different recovery time period. The fastest recovery time of aquatic animals in the group of coral reef fish, crustaceans and mollusks were observed in black damsel (Neoglyphidodon melas), ridged swimming crab (Charybdis natator) and penguin's wing oyster (Pteria penguin) at 220, 226 and 618 days after oil spill, respectively.
