Synergistic toxicity and behavioral effects of synthetic pyrethroids on aedes aegypti (L) and aedes albopictus (skuse)

Abstract: The prevalence of Aedes-borne arboviruses is escalating globally as the principal vectors, Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus continue to spread and change behaviour. Arbovirus diseases impose a significant burden on national economies and public health systems. Currently, vector control is the sole preventive measure because antiviral medications and vaccines are unavailable. Nevertheless, there are research gaps in this field. This study reviewed the current dynamics of entomological factors driving arbovirus transmissions in Thailand; assessed the incidence of insecticide resistance in Aedes vectors, and evaluated interventions critical for Aedes vector control. Baseline study findings reveal a significant incidence of insecticide resistance in both vectors. V1016G and F1534C mutations in Ae. aegypti, with allelic frequencies ranging from 26% to 57%, respectively, were recorded. Notably, synergism with piperonyl butoxide was observed to restore susceptibility in both species. To investigate the impacts on Ae. aegypti, pyrethroidtreated clothing technology was evaluated in a laboratory and semi-field setting utilizing jute (hessian), cotton (calico), and polyester (bed net) textiles. The results showed that the three fabrics had different efficiency in producing repellency in the laboratory. Semi-field testing revealed a decrease in human landing rates, as well as disruptions in blood-feeding habits and fecundity. This study underpins the existence of phenotypic and molecular resistance. This research also unveils promising tools for Aedes vector control as it underscores the potential of costeffective materials such as hessian and calico for the deployment of spatial repellent products.
