Abstract:
Rice is a major economic crop of Thailand. Normally, rice farming requires ample water while water resources are becoming scarce. The concept of rice farming using sprinkler irrigation and drip irrigation during dry season is proposed. The experimental plots using both irrigation methods were researched in Phetchaburi Irrigation Water Management Research Station. The objective of this research was to assess and compare the water footprint of rice using sprinkler and drip irrigations with two experimental plots in March 2016 July 2016. The results showed that water irrigated by drip and sprinkler methods were not different with the values of 468and 418 mm./rai, respectively. The average growth of rice plant from drip irrigation was 98.63 cm. smaller than the average growth from sprinkler irrigation which was 118.03 cm. The yield from drip irrigation was 604.25 kg. / rai while the yield from sprinkler irrigation was 682.25 kg. / rai. The results showed that in case of drip irrigation: the blue water footprint (WFblue) was 328.65 m3/ton, the green water footprint (WFgreen) was 444.85 m3/ton, the grey water footprint (WFgrey) was 397.19 m3/ton, and the total water footprint was 1,170.69 m3/ ton. In case of sprinkler irrigation: the blue water footprint (WFblue) was 152.86 m3/ton, the green water footprint (WFgreen) was394.13 m3/ton, the grey water footprint (WFgrey) was 263.93 m3/ton, and the total water footprint was 810.92 m3/ ton. Therefore, rice cultivation using sprinkler irrigation had less total water footprint than drip irrigation by 359.77 m3/ton mainly because it had a higher yield while consumed similar amount of water.
