A simplified method for motorcycle emission examination
Abstract:
With the rapid economic growth and rising national income, the number of motor vehicles
in Taiwan has increased year by year. Mobile sources of pollution have become the main source of
urban air pollution. In order to regulate the emission of motorcycles, the Taiwan government
implements a regular exhaust emission inspection system. All vehicles that have been used for more.
than five years are to be inspected every year. The inspection is conducted in an idle condition.
This study found that there is no solid correlation between the emission level at the idle condition
and the real pollution emitted on the streets, indicating that the current inspection process is not an
effective way to screen out the high pollution vehicles. Besides, it also leads the government to
underestimate the actual pollution amount. This study established a chassis dynamometer and ran.
the motorcycle on it with a simplified driving pattern which is composed of a mild acceleration and
a wild acceleration. This study found that the emission coefficient obtained in this way has a closer
correlation with the results obtained in a standard emission laboratory. However, the time duration is
shorter and the cost is relatively low. A portable emission measurement system is also developed in
this study which can be cooperated with the chassis dynamometer to carry out the inspection work.
