Overcoming Employment Barriers: Strategies For Enhancing the Socio-Economic Integration of Professional Workers from Myanmar in Thailand
Abstract:
This study examined the experiences of Myanmar professional migrants who are
working in Thailand, examining the employment challenges and strategies that they view
as helpful in overcoming these barriers. It sheds light on obstacles to migration and their
impact on individuals, communities, and societies.
The purpose of this study was to find out what motivated Myanmar professional
migrants to migrate to Thailand and what challenges they face in their personal and
professional lives. It delved into the employment challenges that they encountered in
Thailand, with a focus on the transition difficulties faced by university graduates. The
study explore employment barriers, such as language proficiency, cultural adaptation,
and discriminatory practices, proposing strategic interventions to aid these young
workers in achieving better employment outcomes and socio-economic integration.
This research utilized a survey design with a quantitative approach. Data were
gathered from 350 respondents to answer the research questions. It was analyzed using
descriptive statistics, percentage distributions, t-tests, Pearsons correlation coefficients,
ANOVA, and multiple regression.
The findings revealed the effects of a lack of job opportunities, skill mismatches,
language barriers, and legal barriers on the employment prospects of Myanmar
professionals in Thailand. The results showed the p-value for limited job opportunities
was .012 and legal barriers was .37, both of which were significant. They also suggested
that Myanmar professionals of different age groups who wish to work in Thailand
perceived employment differently. Multiple regression showed that legal barriers (β =
.609, p < .001) had the strongest positive relationship with integration strategies. On the
other hand, discrimination was also significant, but had a negative relationship with
integration strategies (β = -.091, p = .043). Other factors like language proficiency, skill
mismatches, and job opportunities did not reveal a statistically significant influence. The
overall model explained 36.4% of the effects on integration strategies.
The findings of this study suggest that learning the Thai language can avail more
opportunities to get a professional job. Thai language can also help the migrants to
communicate with officials in order to understand and surmount legal barriers. This study
the broad knowledge for Myanmar professional migrants to integrate into Thai socio-
economic culture by taking practical steps.
