Exploring How Teachers Integrate Values Education Into Teaching Within Christian Education Contexts
Abstract:
The research explores teachers approaches to integrating moral values in their lessons and the impacts of integrating them in teaching. A qualitative study examines how teachers in Adventist schools in Thailand integrate values education, specifically biblical moral values, into their teaching practices across three stages: pre-teaching, during teaching, and post-teaching. Ten teachers from Adventist International School, each with a minimum of five years of teaching experience, participated in semi-structured interviews. The phenomenological approach explored their understanding of moral values, planning for moral values integration, teaching strategies, and the impacts of moral values on students. Findings indicate that teachers intentionally incorporate biblical moral values during lesson planning by outlining moral objectives and selecting relevant biblical texts or stories. During teaching, they connect these values to real-world contexts, facilitate discussions on moral issues, and serve as role models. Various pedagogical strategies and approaches, including analogies, cooperative, hands-on, experiential learning, and facilitating student autonomy, are employed to make moral concepts engaging and meaningful for students. Post-teaching reflections focus on observed behavioral changes in students, such as increased classroom harmony and unity. The study also found that integrating moral values has a lasting impact on students' moral development, providing lifelong guidance and protection. This study offers practical insights for educators in Christian schools seeking to cultivate students moral growth alongside academic learning. It contributes to a deeper understanding of how faith and education can be effectively integrated to support students holistic development.
