Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the association between oral health status and nutritional status among older adults in Chamni District, Buriram province of Thailand. The participants, aged over 60 years old and met the eligible criteria were enrolled in this study. The information collection included medical, dental and personal history, measurement of vital signs and body proportions, examination of oral health status, and evaluation of xerostomia by questionnaire and nutritional assessment by mini-nutritional assessment (MNA). Among a total number of 278 participants (67.6% female, mean age 65.53±4.77 years old), 83 subjects (29.9%) were classified as the risk of the undernutrition group and no subjects was classified as undernutrition group. Xerostomia (Adj.OR=2.41, 95% CI=1.22-4.78, p=0.01) was significantly associated with the increasing risk of undernutrition, regardless of gender, age, socioeconomic status, smoking and alcohol drinking and systemic disease. The number of teeth and tooth pairs was failed to demonstrate this association. The result shows that xerostomia was strongly associated with increasing the risk of undernutrition. Also, the development of suitable holistic screening tool for older people would be a benefit in reducing the risk of malnutrition in older adults.
