Confused Chinese Emotional Adjectives for Chinese Learners in Thailand

Abstract: Based on the study of confusion types and distribution characteristics of "emotion class" confusing adjectives used by junior students majoring in Chinese at the Chiang Rai Rajabhat University in Thailand, this paper analyzes the causes of confusion in accordance to the confusion types and distribution characteristics, and then proposes a number of teaching and learning suggestions for Chinese teachers in Thailand by means of the analysis of confusion reasons. First, collect “emotion class” adjectives from the textbook Chinese Course used by Chinese major at Chiang Rai Rajabhat University, and classify the collected “emotion class” adjectives by questionnaires. Then the collected questionnaire data were examined for “emotion class” confusing adjectives, and a total of 85 pairs were extracted. Among the 85 pairs of "emotion class" confusing adjectives for Thai students, the "emotion" confusing adjectives were classified into five categories: "enjoyment", "anger", "quiet", "sadness" and "fear" in accordance to their semantic subcategories, and analyzed the confusion types of "emotion" confusing adjectives in accordance to the direction of misuse and semantic categories, which can be divided into the same semantic confusion and cross-semantic confusion. Then, seven causes of confusion were analyzed based on this confusion type and distribution characteristics namely: influence of semantic similarity, common influence of semantic similarity and morpheme similarity, influence of semantic similarity and unclear syntactic function, influence of different application scope of Chinese, influence of Thai corresponding words, misinterpretation of Thai semantic field, interaction of Thai literal translation and syntactic structure. In accordance to the causes of confusion, the following teaching suggestions are proposed for the teaching of "emotion" confusing adjectives in Chinese i.e. pay attention to the in-depth discriminates of words in the teaching process, attach importance to the scope of application of different words in the teaching process, lay emphasis on the development of students' reading and writing skills, and clarify the cooperation and division of labor between native teachers and local teachers.
