Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis were; 1) to study the code of discipline
according to walking and footwares of monks, 2) to study the problems of foot
health of sick monks, and 3) to propose a Buddhist innovative prototype for foot
health of sick monks. The qualitative data were collected from primary source,
secondary source, related research works, in-depth interviews, observation, prototype
design and test.
The results of research were found that:
1) In the Buddhas time, bare-feet walking while going for arms-collecting,
walking round for meditation and hike-walking were exercises that increased blood
circulation. The codes of discipline on monks footwares were set forth because of
the foot health problem of Venerable Sonakolivisa. In present day, 90% out of 20
samples agreed with monks walking bare-foot on round-meditation, and 60% while
going for arms-collecting. But 65% agreed with wearing the footwares while hikewalking. And the sick monks should be exempted from this code in any occasions.
2) 90% of foot health problems of sick monks were from noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes that caused from consumption behavior,
lack of exercise, congenital disease and 10% from accidents respectively. The
prevention could be done by adjusting the monks attitude, social perception,
exercise motivation, knowledge channel and foot health innovation.
3) Innovative design thinking for foot health of sick monks is to comply with
the code of discipline, users satisfactory, health and safety, and social acceptability.
The proposed design is brown single-sole rubber sandals with blood circulation
button and innovative materials with diabetes symbol on it.
