Antibiotic use among commercial poultry farmers in Bangladesh : a pharmaceutical anthropology exploration
Abstract:
The antibiotic consumption in the livestock sector contributes to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance globally. In Bangladesh, several types of antibiotics are used in commercial poultry production as growth promoters as well as disease preventive and treatment agents. This study aims to explore the everyday practices of different stakeholders and their power relations that influence by political and economic forces for antibiotic use in commercial poultry production. We conducted an ethnographic study in an urban village of Narsingdi district between June 2019-February 2020. We conducted in-depth interviews, key-informant interviews, and participant observation. Data analysis was conducted through an inductive approach and thematic analysis. Dealers maintain the functional linkage between input producers and poultry farmers during production input transactions. The companies assign sales representatives and veterinarians to maintain marketing channels to archive sales targets of production inputs. The large-scale farmers purchase production inputs from any dealers with payment where small-scale farmers purchase these production inputs from a certain dealer with credit. The large-scale farmers provide poultry treatment based on his own experiences and rely on the government veterinarians for treating severe poultry disease only. The small-scale farmers depend on dealers and company veterinarians for treating poultry. The veterinarians prescribed unnecessary antibiotics to the farmers without a diagnosis of sick poultry. Both farmers used different antibiotics and antibiotic medicated feed frequently for treating diseases and growth promotion of poultry. They did not consider the administration process of antibiotic use for treating poultry. The farmers faced economic loss due to the regular use of costly antibiotics contained feed and antibiotics. This study reveals wider social, cultural, economic, and political aspects that include the meaning of antibiotic as a powerful medicine, and financial interest among stakeholders shaped the determination of antibiotic use among farmers in broiler poultry farming. IMPLICATION OF THE THESIS. The findings of this study will help to direct how and what messages/information should reach to increase the awareness of the different stakeholders involved with the transaction of antibiotics for commercial poultry farms. The findings will be useful for developing an effective policy to reduce the use of antibiotic in commercial poultry farms in Bangladesh.
