Using ERI and MASW for subsurface characterization of pile road embankments
Abstract:
This article explores the use of electrical
resistivity imaging (ERI) and multichannel analysis of surface
waves (MASW) for subsurface characterization of pile road
embankments in Ayutthaya, Thailand. The study aims to
assess the effectiveness of these geophysical techniques and
identify any limitations or challenges faced during data
collection and analysis. ERI is employed to evaluate changes in
resistivity before and after pile installation, providing insights
into variations in material properties. MASW is used to
estimate shear wave velocities, particularly focusing on the
impact of pile installation on subsurface strength. The results
reveal significant changes in subsurface properties following
pile installation, indicating variations in material rigidity and
strength near the piles. However, challenges were encountered
in accurately determining the depth of piles using ERI due to
potential interference from off-plane objects. These findings
highlight the importance of integrating multiple geophysical
techniques for comprehensive subsurface characterization.
Further research is recommended to address these limitations
and enhance accuracy in assessing subsurface conditions for
road embankments constructed on soft clay terrain
