Abstract:
This research aims to study the transformation of the Zhuang language vocabulary used in Jingxi City, Guangxi Province, People's Republic of China. The study also examines the attitudes towards the language of Zhuang speakers in Jingxi City, Guangxi Province, and explores the persistence of the Zhuang language in Guangxi Province. The field research employed a word list of 200 words, selecting samples aged 10-25 years, 30-55 years, and 65 years and above from 15 individuals in the rural areas of South Huadong in Jingxi City and 15 individuals in the northern part of Jingxi City. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted to assess attitudes towards the use of the Zhuang language from 200 people in the rural areas of South Huadong and 200 people in the northern part of Jingxi City. The research results are presented in a descriptive-analytical manner.
The research findings reveal that the study of the transformation of the Zhuang language vocabulary in Jingxi City, Guangxi Province, China, shows that villagers in South Huadong use 67% of traditional Zhuang vocabulary, while urban residents of Jingxi City use only 33%. The transformation of Zhuang vocabulary is influenced by internal factors such as social and economic development, and external factors such as the influence of Mandarin. In rural South Huadong, the most commonly used traditional vocabulary is in the category of numbers, whereas in Jingxi City, it is in the category of kinship terms and titles. Both areas experience changes in Zhuang vocabulary, but the original meanings remain intact.
The analysis of attitudes among Zhuang speakers in Jingxi City shows diversity according to age groups and social contexts. The age groups of 10-25 years and 30-55 years in the southern part of Jingxi City increasingly use Mandarin, whereas in the northern part, Zhuang is consistently used across all age groups. The transmission of language and culture through family and community plays a crucial role. The use of digital media promotes the use of the Zhuang language in the modern era. Challenges in maintaining the Zhuang language include economic and social changes, but there are opportunities through the use of technology and new media.
The persistence of the Zhuang language in Guangxi Province has been supported by the Chinese government through various policies and programs since 1951, including the creation of new characters and the expansion of these efforts in
multiple Five-Year Development Plans. The use of technology and digital media promotes learning and preserving the Zhuang language. The government and communities play vital roles in supporting the Zhuang language through legislation
and various projects. Online platforms enhance access and learning of this culture. Collaboration between communities, government, and technology is key to maintaining and promoting the Zhuang language, as well as fostering understanding
and respect among different cultures globally.
