Abstract: The art of Shadow Play in the South of Thailand is a local cultural performance passed on through many generations. Shadow Play used to be a form of entertainment and conveyed moral and ethical topics along with information to the local people, but nowadays there have been major alterations due to social and cultural change that affect Shadow Play in terms of content and performing style by the applying new media, new tools and new technologies to make it up-to-date. Also, local Southern and other people in Thailand less attend and understand Shadow Play. This is the origin for this study and the creation of this artwork. The thesis Doctor of Fine Arts Program in Arts and Design titled "Shining Light - Seeing Shadows, passed on from the Past till the Present, towards the Creation of Contemporary Art", is created to fulfill the requirements for Doctorate Studies in Arts and Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. Configuration, features and style along with the beliefs and cultural identities of the local Shadow Play of Southern Thailand. Through analysis and synthesis a work of Contemporary Art is created reflecting specific features of Southern Shadow Play in order to spread and communicate Southern Culture to other parts of Thailand. This Creative Research aims to study the historical context. Of Southern Culture the result fromstudiy this and analysis shows the value, identity and configuration of Southern Shadow Play. The result of this study found its final synthesis in the creation of Contemporary Art, The result of the study found that the value and identity of Southern shadow play is the cultural value shows the method of performance such as greeting the theatre, installing the equipment, Hom Rong (prelusion), twilight monkey dance, hermit performance, Roob Cha, Isuan on the cow's back and Ork Prai (Introduction). The shadow play performance is from the shadow of puppets and other components. The art of shadow play performance consists of leader of the team, screen, puppets, story, theatre, light, amplifier, original musical instrument and modern musical instrument, refrain and modern technological media. The inspiration of contempory art help to create value and indentity of Southern shadow play from Hom Rong (prelusion), puppet show and figure of puppets, and other elements of shadow performance. The formal features of the Play, the lighting that causes shadow, the sound and the music, the colors and patterns, the shadow play's stories, etc.., are all re-created in a three-dimensional form: lighting is managed in such a way that it spreads shadows all over the exhibition area by inserting certain objects such as doors, outlets and mirrors into the original area. This all becomes part of the presentation of this work of Installation Art and Video Art using both the walls and the exhibition room area. In total 8 series are created containing 10 pieces, using modern materials like clear acrylic, magic markers, cloth, paper, bulbs, clear plastic sheets and raw-cloth umbrellas as well as new and modern media such as video and projectors for the Video Art.

Abstract: ศิลปะการแสดงหนังตะลุงเป็นวัฒนธรรมของชุมชนท้องถิ่นภาคใต้ที่สืบทอดมายาวนานหลาย ยุคหลายสมัย หนังตะลุงทำหน้าที่ทั้งที่เป็นสื่อบันเทิงและถ่ายทอดศีลธรรม จริยธรรม ตลอดจน ข่าวสารให้กับประชาชน แต่ปัจจุบันเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปค่อนข้างมาก เนื่องจากการเปลี่ยนแปลง ทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรม ทำให้หนังตะลุงมีการปรับเปลี่ยนทั้งเนื้อหา และรูปแบบการแสดง โดยการ นำสื่อ เครื่องมือและเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ มาใช้ผสมผสานในการแสดงหนังตะลุงให้ทันสมัยอยู่เสมอ รวมทั้งประชาชนทั้งในภาคใต้และท้องถิ่นอื่นๆ ในประเทศไทยสนใจและเข้าใจศิลปะการแสดงหนัง ตะลุงน้อยลงซึ่งเป็นที่มาของการศึกษาครั้งนี้ วิทยานิพนธ์ดุษฎีบัณฑิต สาขาวิชาศิลปะและการออกแบบ เรื่อง "ส่องแสงแลเงาอดีตที่ทอด ยาวถึงปัจจุบันสู่การสร้างสรรค์ศิลปะร่วมสมัย" มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเป็นการศึกษาบริบทเกี่ยวกับ ประวัติความเป็นมา องค์ประกอบ ลักษณะและรูปแบบ ตลอดจนคติความเชื้อและอัตลักษณ์ทาง วัฒนธรรมของศิลปะการแสดงหนังตะลุงของท้องถิ่นภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย ทำการวิเคราะห์และ สังเคราะห์เพื่อการสร้างสรรค์ศิลปะร่วมสมัย (Contemporary Art) ที่สะท้อนถึงอัตลักษณ์ของหนัง ตะลุงภาคใต้ สำหรับเป็นสื่อเผยแพร่วัฒนธรรมภาคใต้ในพื้นที่อื่น มีลักษณะเป็นงานวิจัยเชิง สร้างสรรค์ศิลปะ(Art Creative Research) ซึ่งมีขั้นตอนของการศึกษาประกอบด้วย การศึกษา ศิลปะการแสดงหนังตะลุงภาคใต้และวิเคราะห์ (Analysis) คุณค่า อัตลักษณ์ ตลอดจนองค์ประกอบ ของการแสดงหนังตะลุง และนำผลที่ได้จากการศึกษาในขั้นตอนแรกมาทำการสังเคราะห์ (Synthesis) เพื่อสร้างสรรค์ศิลปะ (Creative Art) ผลการศึกษาพบว่าคุณค่าและอัตลักษณ์ของหนังตะลุงภาคใต้ คือ ขนบนิยมหรือลำดับขั้นตอน การแสดงหนังตะลุง เช่น การทักทายโรงหนัง การตั้งเครื่องเบิก โหมโรง ออกลิงหัวค่ำ ออกฤาษี ออก รูปฉะ ออกรูปพระอิศวรทรงโค และออกปรายหน้าบท เป็นต้น และการเล่นเงาจากการเชิดรูปหนัง และองค์ประกอบต่างๆ ในศิลปะการแสดงหนังตะลุง คือ นายหนัง จอหนัง รูปหนัง เรื่องบทหนัง โรงหนังตะลุง แสงไฟ เครื่องขยายเสียง เครื่องคนตรีแบบตั้งเดิมและสากล ลูกคู่ และสื่อเทคโนโลยี สมัยใหม่ ซึ่งในการสร้างสรรค์ศิลปะร่วมสมัยได้นำแรงบันดาลใจจากคุณค่าอัตลักษณ์ของหนังตะลุงตะลุง ภาคใต้ คือ การโหมโรง การออกรูปฉะ และรูปทรงจากตัวหนัง และองค์ประกอบในการแสดงหนัง ตะลุง คือ แสงก่อให้เกิดเงา เสียงจากดนตรี และการพากข์ สีสันลวดลายจากรูปตัวหนัง และเรื่องบท หนังตะลุง มาเป็นแนวคิดเพื่อการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานรูปทรง 3 มิติ โดยเน้นส่องแสงไฟไปขังผลงาน ก่อให้เกิดเงา และจัดการกับพื้นที่แสดง โดยแทรกผลงานเข้ากับพื้นที่ที่มีอยู่เดิม เช่น ประตู ช่องลม และกระจก ให้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของผลงานตามแนวคิดศิลปะจัดวาง นำเสนอในรูปแบบศิลปะจัดวาง (Installation Art) และวีดิโออาร์ต (Video Art) จัดวางผลงานโดยรอบผนังและพื้นที่ห้องจัดแสดง จำนวนผลงาน & ชุด 10 ชิ้น ด้วยวัสดุสมัยใหม่ แผ่นอะคริลิลใส สีเมจิก ผ้า กระดาย หลอดไฟ แผ่น พลาสติกใส และร่มผ้าดิบ และนำเอาสื่อสมัยใหม่ อย่างวิดีโอ เครื่องฉายโปรเจดเตอร์มาใช้ตามแนว งานวิดีโออาร์ต
