Potential analysis of hybrid floating solar photovoltaic systems with hydropower electricity generation in Lao PDR
Abstract:
This research explores the potential of integrating hybrid floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) systems with hydropower generation in Lao PDR, focusing on reservoirs managed by EDL-Generation Public Company (EDL-GEN), specifically Nam Ngum 1 (NNG1) and Hoay Lamphan Gnai (HLG), both of which have extensive water surface areas. The study examines three scenarios based on different water surface area coverage rates (1%, 5%, and 10%) to determine the feasible capacity for FPV installations. The findings reveal that NNG1 has significant potential for solar power generation, with the capacity to generate over 7,000 MW when 10% of its surface area is utilized. In contrast, HLG shows a more limited potential, producing up to 13 MW from 1% coverage. The System Advisor Model (SAM) is employed to analyze climate data and simulate energy output, demonstrating key benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions and water conservation. The results emphasize the feasibility of hybrid renewable energy systems in boosting energy production while supporting environmental sustainability in Lao PDR. This study offers valuable insights for energy sector decision-makers and contributes to the ongoing discussion on renewable energy integration.
