Abstract:
The study aimed to examine chemical compositions and antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract
of Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf., commonly called fingerroot. The powder root of B. rotunda was
extracted with ethanol using sonication. The chemical compositions of the extract were determined by using
liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Flavones and prenylated flavonoids have been studied and
evaluated. The major compounds which are alpinetin, pinocembrin, pinostrobin and panduratin A were
identified by using the information from electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) comparing with
known compounds previously reported in the literature. Mass spectra showed that molecular ions were
corresponded to these major compounds. MS/MS fragmentations were also studied to investigate the
compounds. In addition, the antioxidant activity was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)
assay. The extract showed moderate activity with the IC50 of 588.89 ± 51.86 μg/mL comparing with gallic
acid (IC50 = 3.10 ± 0.38 μg/mL) and rutin (IC50 = 36.42 ± 7.03 μg/mL).
