Assessing the operational efficiency of Thai airlines during and post-COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract:
The aviation industry has undergone unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impacting the operations and efficiency of airlines worldwide. This study comprehensively investigates the efficiency of Thai Airlines, both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) BCC model as its primary analytical framework. Faced with unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic, the global airline industry, including Thai Airlines, experienced operational disruptions, fluctuating demand, and financial constraints. The study involves the collection and analysis of extensive data related to inputs (such as manpower, aircraft fleet, and financial resources) and outputs (such as revenue generation) across distinct time periods, covering both the peak of the pandemic and the subsequent post-pandemic recovery period. The DEA model, enabling the simultaneous consideration of various inputs and outputs, serves as the quantitative tool to assess Thai Airlines' relative efficiency compared to industry peers. The results of this study demonstrate that Full-Cost carriers among Thai Airlines outperform Low-Cost carriers during both the pandemic and post-pandemic periods. Finally, by examining Thai Airlines' journey through the COVID-19 crisis and beyond, this study provides recommendations for airline managers, policymakers, and stakeholders seeking to optimize resource allocation for Thai Airlines. These recommendations can serve as guidance, aiding them in formulating operational policies and practices to fortify and restore their business in the post-pandemic era.
