Comparative lead removal efficiency between lemon peels and lemon peels with metal oxide in the aqueous solution
Abstract:
Lead is a toxic heavy metal contaminated in natural and industrial water and caused human health effects. Therefore, it is necessary to treat contaminated waters met water quality standards before uses. The adsorption is effective method and reasonable cost to deal, and natural wastes are interesting materials because of inexpensive and environmentally friendly materials. Lemon peels is chosen with their proper chemical properties for lead removal; however, the increasing of specific lead removal in case of competing ions occurrence should be consider. Since metal oxides can remove heavy metals, adding metal oxides into raw materials may help to improve their efficiencies. This study aimed to synthesize lemon peels materials and to investigate affecting factors of dose (1-6g), contact time (1-6 h), pH (1-11), and concentration (10-70 mg/L). The results showed optimum conditions of lemon peels (LP) and lemon peels with metal oxide (LP-FeO(OH)) at 4 g, 6 h, pH 7 with 84-95 percent of lead removal, and 3 g, 6 h, pH 7 with 100 percent of lead removal, respectively. The adsorption isotherm studies of both materials were corresponded to Freundlich model. LP-FeO(OH) showed higher lead removal efficiency than LP, so adding of metal oxides helped to improve the material efficiency.
