Abstract: This study will cover discussion for further analysis through connotative meanings and aim to analyze and compare the connotative meanings of selected songs from 2008 to 2017, and 2018 to 2022 of the release date. The data covers 100 selected songs based on Billboard’s Year-End Charts Hot 100 songs. The findings reveal that positive connotative meanings are found dominantly in the first period. Notably, in the second period, the findings stand out with positive connotations, while from 2019 to 2021, negative connotations dominate. The similarities of connotative meaning categories in both time periods include thematic references such as “Fight for Life”, “Romantic Relationship”, “Heartbreak”, “Sexuality”, “Money”, and “Communication” in distinctive categories.
