REMOTE WORK DURING COVID-19: An Ally or Enemy for the Work-Life Balance? Remote Work Experiences of Southeastern Asia Union Mission of Seventh-day Adventist Employees

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the number of remote work
arrangements. It is yet unclear how remote work affects work-life balance, despite the fact that it
has been praised for its flexibility. This study examines the work-life balance and remote work
practices of Southeastern Asia Union Mission (SEUM) employees, as well as those of its missions
in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam during the pandemic.
An online survey was used to gather data from SEUM and its missions employees who
identified as office workers. The survey explored demographics, pre-pandemic work experience,
during pandemic work-life balance experiences, and remote work satisfaction.
The findings confirm the initial hypothesis, revealing a significant negative correlation
between remote work and work-life balance for SEUM employees. Employees generally reported
a decrease in work-life balance while working remotely compared to their pre-pandemic office
work. Interestingly, strong organizational communication regarding remote work policies was
associated with higher remote work satisfaction.
However, the unique context of the pandemic necessitates acknowledging factors beyond
remote work itself that might have influenced the results. Future research exploring this
relationship outside of a pandemic setting is recommended.
This study offers valuable insights for SEUM to create a more supportive work
environment for its remote employees. Recommendations include prioritizing clear
communication, investing in employee well-being initiatives, and conducting further research to
inform long-term remote work strategies.
