Investigating the stiffness characteristics of waste tire for crash cushion design

Abstract: Crash cushions are intended to absorb the vehicle’s kinetic energy to safely bring the vehicle to a stop. A further function of this kind of system is to reduce passenger injuries in the event of an accident. Currently, crash cushions are classified according to their characteristics, material composition, and price. The constraints of crash cushions (i.e., they can only be utilized once) necessitate maintenance after a collision. It is expected that the utilization of used materials to reduce costs requires that they be capable of absorbing multiple impacts, which waste tires have the ability to do at an affordable price. This research aims to study the effect of waste tire properties on the design of crash cushions and to suggest the corresponding arrangement pattern and quantity of waste tires for the appropriate crash cushion system. Wheels with a 15-in diameter or an 18-in diameter are the typical size used in sedans, SUVs, and minitrucks in Thailand. Waste tire stiffness was tested under quasistatic conditions, including load direction, repeatability, tire size, and quantity. After acquiring the properties of the waste tires, a mathematics model for crash cushions was developed by using MATLAB/Simulink. The model can be used to analyze the impact-absorbing parameters of waste tires cushion, such as stiffness, as well as the vehicle mass, velocity, and deformation length of the absorber system. The mathematics model was validated by comparing the results of the experimental sled test. Simulation results indicated that when a passenger car collided with the crash cushion at an impact speed up to 60 km/h, the resulting acceleration of occupant was maintained below 20 g. These findings align with the established standards outlined in NCHRP 350 and EN 1317. This research contributes to the assessment of vehicle crash safety performance and for guiding the future development of affordable safety technology.
