The development of video-enhanced language teaching model for Thai EFL teachers with low video-based instruction competency : from training to teaching
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of the development of video-enhanced language teaching (VELT) model on the 30 low VBI competency Thai EFL teachers in Suphanburi province in the 2022 academic year using 5 different instruments which were 1) learning achievement test and 2) technological literacy assessment, 3) strategy-investigating and experience-exploring observation, and 4) training questionnaire and 5) attitude-examining interview. The data were analysed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The results revealed that there was a highly significant difference between the pretest and post-test scores and the pre-assessment and post-assessment scores (p < .001). There were eight strategies found from the observation: engaging learners, utilising multiple videos, preparing videos, attracting learners, increasing retention, enhancing motivation, repeating videos, and verifying learners, and the seven characteristics of VELTic teachers: selective, technology-literate, traditional and teacher-centred, self-efficacious, extrovert, managerial, and competent. Moreover, the adjustability and familiarization were the experiences they encountered in their teaching with the VELT model. There were three aspects from the questionnaire which were learning environment, interaction, and instruction, all of which were associated to social cognitive theory which emphases the role of social interaction and observation in the learning process. The findings of the interview can be classified into four primary themes: Social Cognitive Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, Adult Learning Theory and Assessment for Learning and four emerging themes: School Policy, Materials, Teaching Styles and Students Motivation. The results showed that the VELT model is effective in improving teachers' VBI competency and integrating video software programmes into their teaching English skills.
