Abstract:
Study on origins and qualities of bottom sediments in the Gulf of Thailand was carried out through analysis on aquatic environmental quality, sediment quality, and stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes techniques. Forty-five survey stations in the Gulf of Thailand were investigated along the cruise of M.V. SEAFDEC during April 2013. The results indicated that the Gulf of Thailand had an average level of sedimentary organic matters (11.4±3.0 %) increased ca 1.5 times of those during 1995. Nevertheless, the areas of comparatively high organic accumulations were at the similar sites; ca 45 miles offshore of Trat province, and near Samui Island, Surat Thani province. In those sites, the highest levels of sedimentary organic carbon were 27.1 and 24.0 mg/g, and the highest levels of sedimentary organic nitrogen were 2.9 and 2.1 mg/g, respectively. The δ13C of surface (0-0.5 cm) sediment ranged from -21.6 to -28.7 ‰, implying more than 50% of the marine-origin sediments. The δ15N ranged from 0.2 to 3.6 ‰ and had comparatively low levels in the mid-gulf sites. The δ15N results indicated that the sediment source should be the marine-origin primary producers (the dominant species in this study were the diatoms; Pseudo-nitzschia sp., Thalassiosira sp., Thalassionema sp., and the blue-green algae; Trichodesmium sp.). The comparative study with the environmental and sedimentary qualities of the 4 major rivers (Mae Klong river, Tha Chin river, Chao Phraya river and Bangpakong river) flowing into the inner Gulf of Thailand had implied that the influences of those rivers should cover only in the inner and middle reaches of their estuaries. Impacts to the sedimentary conditions in the Gulf of Thailand were not apparent.
