Abstract:
The purposes of this classroom action research were1) to investigate the cross-level conception of 11th grade students and 2) to find out the best practices of context-based learning on solid, liquid, and gas. The participants were 24 students in 11th grade of a science-math classroom. The research instruments were a cross-level concept test, worksheets and reflective journal entries of students and researcher. The data were analyzed by using quantitative method which were measuring frequency as well as using qualitative method for content analysis to classify cross-level conception. The results revealed that after learning by the context-based learning, the students had 3 cross-level conceptions (macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic levels) on solid, liquid, and gas. Students expanded their conception from macroscopic and microscopic levels to 3 cross-level conceptions in the concepts of physical properties of matter. Although students could explain the three levels of concepts in the concept of change in the particle structure of matter at the beginning, students could explain more details of physical properties and particle structure of matter. The finding showed that the best practices of context-based learning on solid, liquid, and gas were 1) using the macroscopic phenomena context that can explain structure and process of physical changes in microscopic level 2) using the activities that involve with contents and conception levels such as experiment and modeling 3) using the context on re- contextualize process that is similar to the initial context and can explain the linkage of three levels of concepts, explicitly.
