Abstract:
Since foodborne illness incidence has been increasing, the consumers have become health-conscious by paying their attention to choose safe food without contaminants from agricultural products. In this regard, organic food has become widely considered. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to study demographic characteristics and information of three target groups who were consumers, distributors and producers of organic food, to study factors affecting decision making of the target groups, and to study different results of these factors. Three sets of questionnaires based on the different groups were used as a research instrument to collect data. Two of them were used with the sample of 440 consumers and 46 distributors in Bangkok. The other set was used to collect data from 77 producers in Bangkok and adjacent areas. These samples were selected through a simple random sampling and a purposive sampling. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. Hypothesis testing was conducted with One Way ANOVA. DMRT method with a 95% confidence level was applied to compare the factors affecting decision making for consumption, distribution and production of organic food. The results of this research indicated that most of the consumers were female, 21-30 years old, single, earned monthly income of 25,001 -35,000 baht, and worked as private company employee. Consumption period of organic food was < 1 year. Knowledge of organic food was at a low level with a mean of 3.53. Most of the distributors were male, 31-40 years, married. Distribution period of organic food was < 1 3 years. Knowledge of organic food was at a high level with a mean of 7.07. Most of the producers were female, 41 - 50years, married, earned production income of 25,001- 35,000 baht / month and the production period of 4 -6 years. Knowledge of organic food was at a high level with a mean of 7.19. The most popular type of organic food among all three groups was vegetable. Based on consumers prioritization, a factor with the highest importance level was the benefit of organic food in terms of the safety from agricultural chemical free product (4.24±1.02). Based on distributors prioritization, a factor with the highest importance level was the management of organic food in terms of the distribution of organic food with high market demand (4.91±0.28). Based on producers prioritization, factor with the highest importance level was the attitude towards organic food in terms of consumption of healthy organic food (4.87 ±0.33). The results also showed that distributors and producers still prioritized the benefit of organic food in terms of safety from agricultural chemical free products (4.82±0.40 and 4.82±0.38). According to the hypothesis testing, the consumers, distributors and producers differently prioritized all factors with a statistical significance (p<0.05)
