The adsorbent material derived from tamarind-seed testa was used for acid dye adsorption. Two classes of acid dyes used were those for nylon (Nylosan Yellow S-L sgr, Moderacid Yellow GL and Nylosan Red E-BL sgr.180) and for silk (Acid Yellow M3R Conc., Acid Red M and Acid Blue R). The adsorbent material derived from tamarind-seed testa was a low-molecular weight polysaccharide, obtained as a white powder with particle size smaller than 300 µm. The tamarind seeds of 1 kg could be prepared into 53.8 g adsorbent material. The major composition of the adsorbent was lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose, having fibrous structure with average pore size of 7.739 nm. Its pore volume and specific surface area were 1.515 cc/g and 7.83 m2/g, respectirely. A study on the effect of acid dye adsorption revealed that the adsorbent material well adsorbed the dyes at pH 4-5 being the same pH range for nylon and silk dyeing. Therefore, pH adjustment is not required before the effluent treatment by this adsorbent material. From the study of adsorption efficiency of the acid dyes, it was found that the adsorption rate was rapid in the first 15 minutes. After that, the adsorption was slower until reaching the equilibrium in 3 hrs. The dye with maximum adsorption efficiency was Acid Blue R (90.40%). The adsorption isotherms were well described by langmuir and freundlich equations. Nylosan Red E-BL sgr.180 showed both physical and chemical adsorption. Nylosan Yellow S-L sgr and Acid Blue R exhibited monolayer adsorption while Acid Red M and Acid Yellow M3R Conc. Adsorbed in a multilayer manner. The adsorbent material that was saturated by acid dyes could be desorbed at pH 11. In the simulating dyeing bath, it was found that the adsorbent material prepared from tamarind seed testa could adsorb acid dyes for silk better than acid dyes for nylon. Therefore, this adsorbent material is more preferable to for effluent treatment of silk dyeing process in community scale because the preparation method is not complicated with no need to adjust any conditions. When the dyeing process is finished, the water can be treated straightforward. The adsorption efficiency of the acid dyes slightly decreased when sodium sulfate and sodium chloride were employed. Thus, removal of salt before the dyebath effluent treatment is not necessary.
