Worker scheduling of Banbury process using mathematical programming : a tire manufacturing company case study
Abstract:
Nowadays, every organization is growing and expanding in tandem with the economy. Organizational competition tends to increase further. As a result, planning and management in the organization need to be more efficient and take less time. To achieve better results and increased profits, the efficient utilization and management of available resources are critical for an organization. Human resources are critical resources in this regard, and scheduling problems are among the most common challenges in human resource management.
Solving scheduling problems becomes more complex when the skills and needs of workers are considered. Additional variables need to be considered to achieve fairness and balance for both workers and the company. Therefore, solving this problem through experience alone may be difficult or time-consuming. This study proposes the Goal Programming Method, a mathematical model that accounts for both primary and goal constraints, to identify the optimal solution and minimize deviation variables in the goal constraint.
The study was conducted in a tire manufacturer's Banbury process department with 51 workers and 24 tasks, considering workers' two shifts. The proposed model can help solve questions related to how to assign tasks to workers to meet business demands, and how to assign workers to positions that best utilize their skill. Additionally, scheduling helped identify which positions would need to be closed if there were not enough workers available to perform the tasks.
