Internet addiction among undergraduate University students : a structural equation model
Abstract:
The internet is an expedient tool that the youth population uses excessively, and many get addicted, leading to adverse consequences affecting their overall development and productive role in society. Internet addiction is one of the rapidly growing phenomena in this technological era with significant public implications. This study aimed to test the causal model of internet addiction among undergraduate university students. A total of 470 participants were recruited from a university in Eastern province, Thailand, using multi-stage cluster random sampling. Data was obtained using seven questionnaires: the demographic data form, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies- Depression, the Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students, the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale- College, the Brief COPE, the Internet Use Expectancies Scale, and the Internet Addiction Test. Descriptive statistics and the structural equation model were utilized for data analysis. The results revealed that the undergraduates had a mean score of 65.26 (SD = 5.60) for internet addiction. It also indicated that 15.3% of them had a severe level of internet addiction. The model testing revealed that depression, academic procrastination, and perceived social support had a direct effect on internet addiction, and these variables had an indirect effect through ineffective coping. Academic procrastination, followed by depression, strongly influenced internet addiction. The proposed model fitted well with the empirical data on depression, academic procrastination, perceived social support, and ineffective coping and explained 22.9% of the variance of internet addiction. Findings suggest that enhancing digital literacy, providing psycho-educational activities and adaptive coping skills training, may curtail this problem. Interventions for internet addiction are highly warranted.
