DEVELOPMENT OF PROBLEM - BASED LEARNING ACTIVITY TO ENHANCE SCIENCE PROCESSSKILLS AND TEAMWORK SKILLS ON SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY AND THE NATURE OF SCIENCE COURSE FOR 10TH GRADE STUDENTS
Abstract:
The research aimed (1) to develop problem-based learning management activities by
using collaborative learning activities, (2) to examine students scientific processingskills during
problem-based learning activities and, (3) to investigate students teamwork skills during
problem-based learning activities. This research is mixed method research with 24 grade 10
students as the sample for quantitative data and 12 grade 10 students as the sample for qualitative
research. The two groups of students were selected by purposive sampling. The instruments used to
collect the data were comprised of a teamwork skill assessment form, a scientific process skill
assessment form, in-class-video camera, and 6 plans ofproblem-based learning management.
The information obtained was analyzed using mean, and standard deviation.
The results showed that
(1) The research acquired a plan of learning activities consisting of 6 steps i.e.
1) identifying the problem, 2) understanding the problem, 3) conducting research, 4) synthesizing
theknowledge, 5) summarizingand evaluating the answers, and 6 presentingand evaluating
the results of the learning activities.
(2) It was found that the average of science process skills for all 6 learning activities was
at a high level. The skill with the highest average was experimental skills (x̅ =4.22, S.D. = 0.06)
followed by data interpretation and conclusion skills (x̅ =4.06, S.D. = 0.11), and the skill with
the lowest average is that of defining the operational definition of variables (x̅ =3.81, S.D. = 0.13). (3)For the teamwork skill assessed by observing behaviors during problem-based
learning activities, it was found that, in 6 learning activities, the average level of teamwork skills
was at a high level. The skill with the highest average level wasgood interaction and mutual
assistance (x̅ =4.02, S.D. = 0.22) followed by collaborative planning and setting goals (x̅ =3.95,
S.D. = 0.13) and the skill with the least average was creating a good atmosphere for teamwork
(x̅ =3.81,S.D. = 0.26).
