Abstract:
This study examines select discourse features of the Eastern Lawa language as seen in two third person narrative texts, one a biographical account and the other a folk story. The main features examined are marked constituent ordering, segmentation, development, backgrounding, and highlighting. Marked constituent ordering is employed in E. Lawa for a variety of discourse functions, including establishing of departure, marking constituents as focal or indicating various forms of prominence. Based on the limited scope of two texts, it is demonstrated the narratives most often use pronuclear time adverbials at boundaries of new thematic groupings. At other times, where the primary discontinuity might occur along a different thematic dimension (i.e. place), a pronuclear adverbial may not be present. Narrative development is marked along both agent and linkage axes through a connective and a demonstrative pronoun. Secondary events are marked as such and thus backgrounded through the use of a subordinate clause. Events are highlighted through backgrounding the event prior to the highlighted event and through tail-head linkage.
