Abstract:
Waqf is a social welfare activity that has been practiced in Muslim societies since the time of Muhammad (s.w.) Muslims in Thailand have actively practiced Waqf and most of Waqf are in the form of property such as land, building and estate. However, few studies have been conducted on various aspects of Waqf in Thailand. The purpose of this research include: (1) to assess the understanding of Waqf principles of the people in the southernmost provinces; (2) to explore Waqf management models practiced in the southern border provinces; and (3) to investigate the problem on Waqf management in the southern border provinces. Qualitative data were collected from 10 key informants whole quantitative data were gathered from 400 individuals by using simple random sampling. Data analysis was divided into two parts: descriptive analysis for qualitative data and frequency, mean, standard deviation, multiple regression statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficient for quantitative data.
The study indicated that the overall level of awareness on Waqf of the people in Pattani and Satun provinces was moderate. Detailed analysis showed that the level of understanding of Waqf tend to be high. Their awareness on features and status of Waqf was moderate. As for Waqf management, the level of operations was rated high. While sources, finance and accounting, the respondents rated as moderate. In summary, the results showed that the people in Pattani provinces and Satun province tend to have low level of understanding and awareness of Waqf and they are not sure whether the management of Waqf has been effective. Problems faced by Waqf institutions include lack of knowledge on Waqf, lack of training in Waqf in the community, lack of knowledge transfer activities among religious organisations, lack of quality management systems, and lack of marketing and publicity.
