Abstract:
This research aims to study the effects of yoga intervention on psychological well-being and quality of life in early adolescence. This study was a quasi-experimental research with a randomized control trial pretest-posttest design. The evaluation was taken before and after the experiment. The sample group was 26 students in junior high school, who were divided in two groups: experimental and control groups, consisting of 13 in students each. The yoga intervention was taken for 8 consecutive weeks, one session per week for 60-90 minutes. This yoga intervention followed Yoga Sutra and Hatha Yoga methodologies which consist of Yoga Philosophy of The Noble Eightfold Path, basic posture, Sun Salutation, breathing with abdominal muscles and meditation. Data were collected using psychological well-being and quality of life evaluation test and survey questionnaires. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney U Test were used in this experiment. The results of this research showed that the experimental group had statistically significant differences in self-acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, environmental mastery and overall psychological well-being (P-value = 0.022, 0.037, 0.006, 0.031, 0.006). For quality of life, only in physical domain was significantly associated with yoga intervention in the experimental group (0.011) (p<0.05). This study shows that yoga intervention helps early adolescences to have better psychological well-being and quality of life in physical dimension.
