Sustainable highland agricultural land use patterns for Mae Raem and Mae Sa Watersheds, Chiang Mai province

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to study the existing highland agricultural land use patterns; to analyze the socio-economic and environmental sustainability; to analyze the sustainability of highland agricultural land use patterns; and to determine the appropriate highland agricultural land use patterns for Mae Raem and Mae Sa watersheds, Chiang Mai province, cropping year 2012/2013. The result of this study shows that the highland agricultural land use patterns of Mae Raem watershed include 11 patterns such as: vegetables (45.5%), paddy field/field crops (22.7%), paddy field (12.8%), orchard (fruit trees)/vegetables (5.0%), flowering plants (3.0%), orchard (fruit trees) (3.0%), field crops (2.0%), paddy field/vegetables (2.0%), paddy field/field crops/orchard (fruit trees) (2.0%), field crops/vegetables (1.0%), and paddy field/field crops/ vegetables (1.0%). The single pattern in the Mae Sa watershed was vegetables (100.0%). After analyzing the sustainability of highland agricultural land use patterns at the watershed and village levels, it was found that within the Mae Raem watershed, Ban Pang I Ka had a very good opportunity to develop to a sustainable rating (VGODS; 70.0%), and Ban Mae Khi-Pang Hai and Ban Nong Hoi Mai had a moderate opportunity to develop a sustainable rating (MODS; 55.4% and 52.3%). In the Mae Sa watershed, Ban Nong Hoi had a MODS rating (49.1%). For the sustainability of highland agricultural land use patterns, a complete sustainable rating (CS) was evident in the Mae Raem watershed. Where, Ban Pang I Ka had 2 patterns included paddy field (rice)/field crops (maize [field corn] and soybean) (CS; 82.9%), and field crops (upland rice, maize [field corn], peanut [groundnut] and kidney beans) (CS; 81.3%). It was acceptable that CS rating is the appropriate highland agricultural land use pattern. However, this allows better soil and water conservation and does not require the use of chemicals for fertilizer and pest control. Therefore, farmers practices and farming patterns should be introduced to maintain environmental sustainability on farmland in villages and watersheds. Besides the agricultural land use of a permanent and continuous crop rotation based on area conditions, coupled with an appropriate technology transfer that should be provided by government agricultural experts, will ensure farmers’ knowledge of soil and water conservation. Farmers can then use this knowledge for future sustainable highland agriculture.
