Synthesis of activated carbon from turmeric waste by using microwave
Abstract:
In this study, Microwave technique has been used for preparation of activated carbon from turmeric waste
by K2CO3 and H PO4 activation for removal of diazo dye Reactive Black 5 (RB5), onto both carbons namely
KTWAC and HTWAC. The effects of various factor such as microwave power and radiation time on the
activation have been studied. Turmeric activated carbon via H,PO4 at microwave power 800W and radiation
time 30min demonstrated a better development of pore structure, with BET surface area, total pore volume,
and average pore size of 1339.08m2 g, 1.06 cm3 g and 15.90 A, respectively. In addition, chemical activation
could develop both microporosity and mesoporosity. HsPO4 generated a greater micropore volume and
mesopore volume than K2CO; did. The surface chemical properties were characterized by FTIR spectra. The
results demonstrated a large number of acidic groups on the carbon surface.
