Abstract:
The study aims to interpret Ernest Hemingways Iceberg Theory through his writing style in one of his famous short stories Big Two-Hearted River Sequels by using literary stylistic approach, a linguistic tool that mediates between linguistics and literary criticism. The objective of using literary stylistic approach is to ensure the recognition of identifiable linguistic evidences that emerge from the analysis, making the study less subjective. This study is conducted on the basis of framework adapted from Shorts linguistic deviation (1996), believing that specific characteristics in a language that deviate from their own norms and a writers norms are used to create foregrounding which enhances aesthetic value of the work, affecting the readers reading experience. The analyses found strong linguistic evidences; the use of short simple sentences mixed with long narratives conjoined by and, the nominal structure modified by definite article, and the types of adjectives used. All three indicates the use of grammatical deviation, deviating both from the norm of the English grammar and the norm of Hemingway himself as well. Such characteristics evidently relate to the description of Hemingways Iceberg Technique.
