Geographical distribution of dorysthenes buqueti guerin (Coleoptera : Cerambycidae) and genetic diversity of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) sorokin in sugarcane plantations in Thailand

Abstract: The sugarcane longhorn stem borer (SLSB), Dorysthenes buqueti Guerin (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), is an economically important pest of sugarcane in Thailand, which causes great reduction in sugarcane yields. Survey of its geographical distribution during 2014 and 2015 revealed that SLSB was found in Central, East, Lower North and Northeastern regions of Thailand. The percentage of infestation by SLSB larvae varied from 0 to 57.6 %. Factors influencing infestation intensity were determined by considering spatial autocorrelation. The results of the GLMM also indicated that SLSB was less abundant in heavy clay soil type whilst it commonly found in clay loam with heavy infestation. Regarding relationships between % sugarcane fields and damage, two different scales of spatial autocorrelation were found: A positive effect at a small scale with 0.5 km, and a negative effect at a larger scale with 20 km. The former was likely to be related to dispersals ability of SLSB adults. The latter suggests a possibility that SLSB is regulated by specific natural enemies to SLSB, which can disperse as far as 20 km. It has been reported that the green muscadine fungus (GMF), Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin infects and kills SLSB so that the GMF is a possible biological control agent of SLSB. We tested virulence of several isolates of GMF from Thailand and appropriate concentration of GMF conidial suspension. An isolate from Khon Kaen (KK) showed the highest virulence to instars 5th – 9th of SLSB. In biological control, aqueous suspension containing 108 conidia/ml of KK isolate seemed the best for mass production and application. Six isolates of GMF from SLSB in Thailand was likely a cryptic species.
