Abstract:
(The Fallacy of False Dilemma)
The objectives of this research were (1) to study Meṇḍakapañha in the Milindapañha scripture (2) to analyze the methods of defending against Buddhist dilemma in Buddhist philosophy. And (3) to analyze the methods of defending against Buddhist dilemma in the Milindapañha scripture. The findings indicate that these Buddhist dilemmas are found in the fourth division of the scripture which is known as Meṇḍakapañha. Some evidences point out that this division is written in A. D. 100 in Sri Lanka in Theravada sect. Additionally, the characters are different from the first three parts of the scripture due to their ambiguous characteristics. First, according to the analytical study in the method of defending against the dilemmas in Buddhist philosophy, it is found that there were 20 hypothetical methods to attack the dilemma, comprising of the 10 methods of answerable cases and the 10 methods for unanswerable cases. Next, for the problem of dilemma in Milindapañha, It is found that most problems have sprung from the fallacy of false dilemma. However, the findings show that the process of Buddhist argument can avoid those dilemmas perfectly. The answers to those dilemmas can be categorized into 3 groups: the 5th hypothetical method (D) (vibhajjabyākaraṇa, paṭipucchābyākaraṇa, and analogy argument), the 6th hypothetical method (E) (vibhajjabyākaraṇa and analogy argument), and the 11st hypothetical method (J) (only vibhajjabyākaraṇa). It reveals that all of the hypothetical methods lead to answerable cases conformed to the objectives of the construction of Buddhist dilemma which was formed some responses preventing future Buddhist apologists. Therefore, the answers to dilemmas is the reflection of applying the Buddhist philosophy principles in order to defend rationally the Buddhist teaching or explication.
