Abstract:
Thailand exports poultry product about 34 percent of total production, which is ranked in fourth of all exporter, so poultry production is important to Thai economy. Feed manufacturer is an upstream manufacture for poultry production chain. In both domestic and export marketing, the proportion of poultry feed manufacturer is more than 83 percent of total feed manufacturer. However, maize is a main raw material for feed production. The processing of maize cultivation generated many impacts which effected to environment and social. Hence, this study aimed to study and apply Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems (SAFA) for assessing environmental sustainability and social sustainability of maize cultivation in Northern Thailand. Studied scope is maize cultivation which have 6 cultivation technologies, as followed; Good Agricultural Practice (GAP), non-Good Agricultural Practice (nonGAP), Irrigation area, non-Irrigation area, Slope area, and Flat area. This study found GAP is better than non-GAP in term of overall environmental sustainability. Social sustainability was ranked in Best because farmers use only family labour and children should help their parents for appropriate work without employment. Hotspot of environmental sub-themes are GreenHouse Gas, Water Withdrawal, and Energy use. Although, GAP emit CO₂ more than non-GAP, GAP used organic fertilizer for improving soil properties and GAP avoided burning farm in soil preparation step which decreasing air pollutant issues.
