Feasibility of using cooling tower for reducing aerosol particulate matter (PM) at outdoor environment
Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to use a cooling tower as an air washer for
reducing aerosol particulate matter (PM) in an outdoor environment. A portable PM2.5
(Particulate Matter 2.5) monitoring equipment is used for detecting the air to be detected
of dust particulates in the air. The equipment comprises a portable ambient air sampler
at the rate of 5 L/min and a filter medium inside the filter holders to collect PM2.5,
which physically collects particles 2.5 microns. The experiment was done in the cases
where the cooling tower was switched off and switched on. The measurement was taken
place at the inlet and the exit each with three different locations around the cooling
tower. The collected PM2.5 mass in each test condition was measured with
Microbalance with the resolution of 0.1 μg. The mass difference between that at the
inlet and the exit in each location and test case was recorded, calculated, and averaged.
The PM2.5 concentration was calculated by divide the net mass gain of the filter by the
volume of air that passed through the filter. The result showed that the amount of PM2.5
was removed in the cooling tower when the air passed through it. In terms of PM2.5
concentration, the air washer could reduce by approximately 50% on average
calculation. This showed that a cooling tower could be applied to work as an air-washer
for reducing aerosol particulate matter in an outdoor environment efficiently.
