Abstract:
This article studies asymmetric relationships of 3 variable pairs including 1) oil prices and gold prices in the global market, 2) gold prices in Thailand and gold prices in the global market and 3) gold prices in Thailand and Thai baht to US dollar exchange rate. According to those variables, models of the asymmetric relationships to find out the long term relationships and the short term effects are constructed. The asymmetric models require sorting out data into two groups: price increase and price decrease. The results show that there is an asymmetric long-run relationship between oil prices and gold prices in the global market while there is an asymmetric long term relationship between gold prices in Thailand and in the global market. The result, however, indicates that the gold prices in Thailand do not have a long-run relationship with Thai baht to US dollar exchange rate. In contrast, the model of the asymmetric short-run relationship can explain only 13 percent of changes in the gold prices in the global market. On the other hand, it can describe 90 percent of changes in the gold prices in Thailand.
